Predictions for 2021 (and Buh Bye 2020!)

Dear Insane Children,

Happy (almost) New Year! 2020 was a bit crap. But it’s almost over and… well, here’s hoping (REALLY HOPING) that 2021 brings us a bunch of good stuff.

Speaking of good stuff…

We had a fun live stream over Twitch yesterday. If you missed it, I’ve just uploaded a copy over on my YouTube Channel. You can check that out HERE

But if you don’t want to sit through a 2-hour live stream and only want to hear what we have in store for 2021, you can click HERE

The shorter video walks through the various projects we have going on at the moment – and talks about the different ways those might (or might not) move forward in 2021.

All of this is, of course, only made possible with your support, involvement, and trust. And for that, again, a huge THANK YOU to the Insane Children.

I have a feeling 2021 will be the year that all of our investment, commitment, and creativity will start paying off. Fingers crossed!

Hysteria Christmas (Rabbit and BD Presents)

Dear Insane Children,

Merry Christmas! (At least it is Christmas here in Shanghai). Woo!

And I have presents for you!

First up, the revised version of Hysteria Rabbit and Tote Bag:

Changes to the bag and rabbit reflect all the feedback we collected via Crowd Design from you here on Patreon and over on my Instagram. Note that the back of the bag DOES include the Mysterious logo. I’ll take better pictures and post those later. But we think this is pretty close to final – a few more tweaks to things like eye position and fur type… but we’re almost there!

Remember, this will be a Patreon exclusive for a few months in 2021 (then made available over on Mysterious). There are some previous posts where this is discussed in more detail.

A DEAL IS SIGNED!

The other present I have for you is: We’ve signed an agreement with a major film producer in Hollywood who will work to make “OZ: Adventures” into a TV series!

A massive THANK YOU to the Insane Children for your help via Crowd Design in defining and presenting the “OZ: Adventures” concept. Our work here on Patreon and our Live Streams generated the interest and awareness that eventually converted into this deal. Great work!

At some point in January 2021, I’ll provide more details about the company and the work being done to get Oz made into a major TV series. [REDACTED 2] will be named and brought into the Crowd Design process. Yay!

As part of the vision for this project, we’ll continue to involve Patreon, Crowd Design, Live Streams, and all the other aspects of our Community that make what we do here so unique. And the founder/CEO of [REDACTED 2] is very supportive of us trailblazing with this new type of development process – in which the fans are at the table as we create the content that becomes games, tv series, merch, and more.

I also believe that the progress we’ve made on this tv series deal can help to move along the BD work we’re doing with [REDACTED] towards building a game studio where we can bring Oz and Alice to life. Yay! Progress!

Speaking of Asylum, our art team continues to crank out amazing illustrations based on the Asylum Narrative. More of that content will be shared next week after the Christmas Holiday. Martin and I are also talking about doing a Live Stream next week on Tuesday or Wednesday (Shanghai time). More on that soon!

Hope everyone is warm, happy, and healthy. Sending out massive LOVE to everyone!

Christmas Mass

Dear Insane Children,

Merry Christmas! Which, when you think about it, as an incredibly morbid thing to go around saying to one another. Why? Well, according to the Internets:

The word “Mass” is strictly a Catholic word and thus, so is “Christ-Mass.” “Mass” in religious usage means a “death sacrifice.” In essence, the Mass is the ceremonial slaying of Jesus Christ over and over again. “Christmas” means by definition “death of Christ”.

In other words, we’re all running around with presents in our arms screaming: Jesus Christ Death Sacrifice!!!

Like I said, morbid.

Speaking of morbid… We’re working on a scene from the Asylum narrative in which Alice floats through a cathedral scene filled with death and fire.

The scene reads:

The walls of the Queen’s Throne Room dissolve into the arched heights of a Church Cathedral (modeled on St. Augustine’s, London). Row after row of pews are filled with black-clad mourners. Sounds of crying and wailing fill the air alongside an Organ Dirge. Alice floats down the center aisle towards the pulpit – Caterpillar’s mushroom fills the space where the choir would normally sit.

Whispers of “It’s your fault!” “Where were you?” “They say she’s got the devil in her!” rise to a fever pitch as Alice glides towards the caskets at the front of the church.

The caskets burst into flames as the screams and accusations reach a cacophony. The walls, ceilings, and fixtures of the church burst apart like pieces of a puzzle, leaving Alice floating before The Caterpillar on his mushroom.

Alice: “I could have saved them. Everyone I love is lost.”

Caterpillar: “You still have yourself.”

The Church flies back together, the air filled with sunbeams, parishioners dressed in white. At the pulpit, the priest holds a newborn baby in the air, then lowers it into a bath of water. This is Alice’s christening. As the baby touches the water the scene goes black.

And these illustrations from Joey (main image above) show the work being done to bring these scene to life.

Our team has provided a wall of feedback to Joey, suggesting elements that need removal, addition, or improvement.

For example, Alex says:

I feel this design of a church render is amazing, but is very literal.

It doesn’t catch the emotional weight, shock value or severity of the “Surreal” aspect of the scene as much as I was expecting. Nor does it follow the style of smoke and shadow / purple colours from the other scenes in slumber? Even if they were worked in slightly, might enhance that this occurs in slumber to the viewer.

Perhaps adding some elements that are larger or in different scale to Alice (Massive, literal cracks and broken parts of the Church, mourners who are huge in scale, larger screaming or crying faces), might add to catch that emotional weight of the funeral.

The inclusion of the caskets burning / on fire might also add some weight to this.

And Omri sent over the sketch (above) which suggests how the image might be updated to include Alice and the burning caskets.

The final version of this image should be pretty epic.

Let us know in the comments below what you think!

Here in Shanghai, it is Christmas Eve and we’re working to catch up on time lost while Grandma was away from the home studio. Everything is OK back in Yan’s hometown… at least for now. And we have our little family back together for Christmas.

I’ll schedule this post to go out tonight while we sleep, so you’ll be reading this on Christmas Even (assuming you’re in the US). I hope that wherever you are, you’re warm and safe and with the ones you love.

And just know that when you are here in the Asylum you are always with the ones that love you.

Merry Death Sacrifice to All,

Hysteria V1.0

Dear Insane Children,

Font Lord here with… well… whatever this is   😀

As you can see, we have received the V1.0 prototype of the Hysteria Rabbit from the factory, and let’s just say that it needs a little work.

If we compare it to the original design, we can clearly see that it’s missing stitching, black feet and the face shape is kinda wrong too.

What other changes (if any) do you think need to be made for V2.0 ?

We also have some designs for the bag that will come with the Rabbit and we’d certainly appreciate your feedback about this in the poll below.

Which of these do you think we should go with? Or maybe we need to see more attempts?

As usual, sound off in the comments with your thoughts, ideas, suggestions and ponderings on both the rabbit and bag   🙂

– Cheers, from an increasingly chilly Shanghai.

The Dungeons

Dear Insane Children,

You may have noticed that it’s been a bit quiet around the Asylum these days…

That’s because I’ve barely had two minutes to rub together. Yan’s mom had to rush back to her hometown in Shengzhou to be with her ailing mother. That’s Yan’s Grandmother on her mother’s side. Lucky’s Great-Grandma has been in a nursing home for a while now… and is in declining health.

We don’t know how long Vampire Grandma* will be gone… but in the meantime, the situation at home has turned into one where Yan and I are trying to balance work, child care, and life in general. It’s at times like this that we realize just how much work Grandma does to keep our home running smoothly.

Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated during this time.

And, as usual, though I am not posting updates as frequently, there’s still a ton of work going on with our Alice: Asylum pre-production team. The “Dungeons of Anger” illustration (main image, above) just arrived from Adam. Beautiful!

And progress is being made with [REDACTED] and [REDACTED 2] – and I know that going into the near year we can actually reveal more about these Business Development efforts.

I think Yan and I will have sorted out our juggling act over the next few days… and I will be able to sit down and post a proper update filled with art, design, and other progress.

QUESTION: Should we do a Live Stream on December 23rd? That’s the 24th for us here in Shanghai. Martin and I just aren’t certain there will be enough people tuning in during the holiday period. Let us know in the comments below!

*We lovingly refer to her as “Vampire Grandma” because she’s always working in the dark. She comes from an era in China when they literally did not have electricity – so, to her, turning on a light is a (wasteful) luxury. That means I’ll often turn on a light in a dark room – like the kitchen – to reveal her standing there in the dark (washing the dishes or something). Always gives me a scare!
